How To Prevent Gum Disease And Know How To Recognize It

Filed under: news — Admin @ 4:08 pm

Gum disease, also referred to as periodontal disease, is an infection of the bone and tissues that support teeth. If untreated it can be serious and result in loss of teeth. Gum disease is typically caused by plaque buildup that forms to the teeth. This plaque contains a bacterium that produces toxins that will damage and irritate the gums.

Warning signs of gum disease:
1. Gums that are red, tender or swollen
2. Persistent bad breath
3. Sores in the mouth
4. Gums that bleed while eating, brushing or flossing.
5. Receding gums
6. Pus between teeth and gums
7. Teeth that are separating or loose

The best prevention is oral hygiene to remove the bacteria and plaque that accumulates on the teeth. This includes: brushing and flossing, using mouthwash and scheduling regular visits with the dentist. Cleaning by a professional is just as important as oral hygiene at home.

You can help to prevent gum disease by
1. Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly.
2. Avoiding tobacco products.
3. Getting the proper nutrition for your teeth and jaws.
4. Having regular checkups with a dentist twice a year.

Proper treatment for gum disease and early detection can keep a situation from becoming much worse. If caught early enough, treatment is very likely. After gum disease is identified by a dentist, it is typically treated by a periodontist. Periodontitis requires quick treatment to remove the infection and stop any damage to the teeth or gums and then followed by long-term care for maintenance of the health of the mouth. One form of treatment is surgery where gum tissue is rebuilt using tissue from other areas of the mouth. Some people will choose this option for cosmetic reasons to improve the look of their gums and smile. An alternative to Chicago gum surgery for gum disease is laser treatment. This is performed with anesthesia and done on more severe cases of gum disease.
